Technorati tags youtube
Technorati tags movil
Technorati tags <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/images" rel="tag" 0="">images

"Quantum information teleported from light to matter"

Beaming people in Star Trek fashion is still in the realms of science fiction but physicists in Denmark have teleported information from light to matter bringing quantum communication and computing closer to reality.

Until now scientists have teleported similar objects such as light or single atoms over short distances from one spot to another in a split second.

But Professor Eugene Polzik and his team at the Niels Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University in Denmark have made a breakthrough by using both light and matter.

"It is one step further because for the first time it involves teleportation between light and matter, two different objects. One is the carrier of information and the other one is the storage medium," Polzik explained in an interview on Wednesday.

The experiment involved for the first time a macroscopic atomic object containing thousands of billions of atoms. They also teleported the information a distance of half a meter but believe it can be extended further.

"Teleportation between two single atoms had been done two years ago by two teams but this was done at a distance of a fraction of a millimeter," Polzik, of the Danish National Research Foundation Center for Quantum Optics, explained.

"Our method allows teleportation to be taken over longer distances because it involves light as the carrier of entanglement," he added.

Quantum entanglement involves entwining two or more particles without physical contact.

Although teleportation is associated with the science-fiction series Star Trek, no one is likely to be beamed anywhere soon.

But the achievement of Polzik's team, in collaboration with the theorist Ignacio Cirac of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany, marks an advancement in the field of quantum information and computers, which could transmit and process information in a way that was impossible before.

"It is really about teleporting information from one site to another site. Quantum information is different from classical information in the sense that it cannot be measured. It has much higher information capacity and it cannot be eavesdropped on. The transmission of quantum information can be made unconditionally secure," said Polzik whose research is reported in the journal Nature.

Quantum computing requires manipulation of information contained in the quantum states, which include physical properties such as energy, motion and magnetic field, of the atoms.

"Creating entanglement is a very important step but there are two more steps at least to perform teleportation. We have succeeded in making all three steps -- that is entanglement, quantum measurement and quantum feedback," he added.

Technorati tags quantum
Technorati tags Star Trek
Technorati tags <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/teleported" rel="tag" 0="">teleportedUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22494115.post-1159789295150038282006-10-02T04:37:00.000-07:002006-10-02T04:44:34.626-07:00

Google, EBay form advertising alliance

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - In a deal between two of the Internet's most prominent properties, Google Inc. will begin selling advertising on Web auction leader eBay and help buyers quickly ring an online merchant to do business.
The arrangement announced Monday promises to introduce ``click-to-call'' Web site technology to a broader audience and potentially speed its adoption as a means to more quickly connect online consumers with advertisers. It allows potential buyers to call up sellers by clicking a link in a Web page.
``We have a chance to create a whole new way for buyers and sellers to connect online and to create what we hope will be a significant revenue stream for both eBay and Google,'' eBay Chief Executive Meg Whitman said in an interview Sunday night.
Last year, eBay Inc. bought the Internet phone service Skype. Google has its own messaging and voice telephone service, Google Talk. Both services will be used in the partnership, though details were not disclosed.
Google CEO Eric Schmidt said the agreement with eBay is ``likely to go on for many years,'' but he would not disclose the terms of the deal or what it might mean for the Mountain View-based search engine's bottom line. Whitman said eBay does not expect the partnership to affect its financial performance either this year or next.
Under the partnership, Google would become the exclusive provider of text advertising on eBay outside the United States. In May, eBay announced a deal with the No. 2 Internet search engine, Yahoo Inc., to serve all its domestic advertising.
The second component of the alliance calls for the two Silicon Valley companies to work together on developing a service that lets Web surfers place telephone calls through their computers or handheld devices when they click on a link in an Internet ad.
Schmidt and Whitman said they would begin testing some of their joint services early next year.
Whitman said eBay decided to give Google's advertisers access to its international auction sites after choosing Yahoo for its domestic advertising because of the competing Internet search engines' respective strengths and how they mesh with eBay's assets.
San Jose-based Ebay also owns PayPal, the online payment service, and when the company joined advertising forces with Yahoo, PayPal became the preferred payment provider for purchases made on Yahoo.
Similarly, eBay plans to rely on Google's international presence to build a worldwide market for Skype, the Luxemborg-based Internet phone provider the company acquired last year.
The companies said they would use Skype and Google Talk, the search engine's instant messaging and voice-over-Internet telephone service, to build a search function that lets Web surfers launch Internet phone calls to eBay merchants or Google advertisers by clicking on ads.
Promoting ``click-to-call'' advertising was also part of the deal eBay announced with Yahoo in May.
Although eBay already was one of Google's biggest advertisers, the search engine launched a rival online payment service to Paypal in June. Schmidt said the overlapping services and partnerships are all part of Silicon Valley's effort to respond to tech-saavy shoppers who want service in a hurry.
``This is all about speed,'' he said. ``The moment somebody wants to buy something, we want that advertiser to be able to sell it, hawk it or do whatever they want with it.''
Technorati tags ebay
Technorati tags <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/google" rel="tag" 0="">google

Technorati tags <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/mariano+amartino" rel="tag" 0="">Mariano Amartino

During O'Neill's lifetime, the dolls were a popular novelty item, often associated with carnivals and country fairs, where they were given as prizes. The Kewpie doll is one of the earliest and most successful examples of a mass-marketed toy. In 1910, O'Neill moved her characters to the Women's Home Companion. Three years later, she designed a babylike doll with its characteristic rotund shape and plume of wispy hair. The doll became an instant sensation and its sales made O'Neill a millionaire within a year. Just as Barbie dolls (see entry under 1950s—Commerce in volume 3) would later be dressed as a variety of characters, Kewpies came dressed as cowboys, farmers, bellboys, and firemen, and in the uniforms of U.S., British, French, and German soldiers. There was also a line of black Kewpies known as Hottentots. Besides the dolls, O'Neill created Kewpie images for a wide variety of products like chinaware, picture frames, clocks, greeting cards, wallpaper, and vases. O'Neill also wrote and illustrated a series of Kewpie books as well as a comic-strip version in the mid-1930s."

"The Kewpie dolls were originally made of china or bisque (unglazed china).

"PayPal delivered nearly a quarter of eBay's most recent quarterly revenue of $1.3 billion, the Wall Street Journal said.
That PayPal revenue may look like a big jar of chocolate chips to the Cookie Monsters at Google. Their rival system, called GBuy, has been getting a workout since the early part of 2005. The Journal cited a source briefed on the service:

For the last nine months, Google has recruited online retailers to test GBuy, according to one person briefed on the service. GBuy will feature an icon posted alongside the paid-search ads of merchants, which Google hopes will tempt consumers to click on the ads, says this person. GBuy will also let consumers store their credit-card information on Google.

Storing payment information has been an ease-of-use feature and strength of PayPal. Google has enough brand recognition to get a lot of attention. The Journal's report seems to suggest the way Google will get users on board will be through its GBuy retailers. But will eBay accept GBuy as a payment method? Probably, as long as eBay gets its cuts of a sale as is customary.

The GBuy.com domain returns a "page not found" error when tested, so whatever Google has on tap isn't readily available yet. The domain has been registered to the Burbank, CA, firm Trout & Zimmer. SearchEngineWatch noted in September 2005 how the domain gcalendar.com was transferred from Trout & Zimmer to Data Docket Inc, a firm well known for registering domain names with Google as part of the name.

Google, as per usual, had no comment on any pending products, the Journal said."

Technorati tags paypal
Technorati tags google
Technorati tags bidpay
Technorati tags western union
Technorati tags online payment
Technorati tags wall street journalUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22494115.post-1151436606007650242006-06-27T12:30:00.000-07:002006-06-27T12:47:31.816-07:00

Haloscan commenting and trackback have been added to this blog.

Technorati tags haloscan
Technorati tags trackback

Imperdible.
Making a watch by hand, Donald W. Corson
In these days of “fast” and “convenient” I decided to commence a work of “painstaking” and “craftsmanship”, making my own wristwatch. I have had the idea for a certain arrangement of the watch dial, as on the image at the right, for a while now. My investigations into available movements showed that no production movement would give me this layout. After a long period of indecision and wondering what I was really getting myself into I decided to make my own movement, followed by the case and dial.
That is a big jump, but we engineers are used to creating things that didn’t exist before so it was mostly the craftsmanship portion of the work that worried me. Am I able to do this watchmakers work, work at such a small scale? To put the chances on my side I decided to do two things: 1) take the watchmaking correspondence course of the BHI, which gave me a lot of the basic skills, but which I have to admit I haven’t even finished the first of three years, and 2) make a complete CAD model of the movement and watch before starting.
My first attempt at making a movement was to make one with all the pinions in a straight line. A simplified movement with the largest possible expansion, to be able to see and work on everything as easily as possible. Even so that first attempt at a movement was not crowned with success. But one learns fastest through failure and the attempt to fathom why, despite ones best efforts, things did not go right. And learn I did.
The following are posts I made to an Internet watchmaking forum describing the advancement of my work during the course of almost a year. From a few square pieces of cold brass to a working movement in a one-of-a-kind case. One of the joys of this work was the constant changes in skillset needed. From machinist to watchmaker to silversmith, etc.. As such the work is never boring, never repetitive, always new challenges and unknowns to be overcome.
The articles below describe the work to make this watch in approximately chronological order starting with cutting the first pieces of brass. At that time I had already spent about 6 months making a complete 3D CAD model of the movement and case along with production drawings of each piece I was going to make. Without such complete preparation such a project is doomed to failure from the beginning. And in spite this preparation, there was still enough that got changed underway or that I discovered that I had forgotten.

Technorati tags timezone
